GREEN ROOFS

The huge global interest in creating environmental awareness has been the basis for the successful implementation of the system called vegetated roof structures, in any region of the world. This is also added to the versatility of the system, since it can be implemented both in new construction and rehabilitate buildings; and can be done in these different types of crops depending on the characteristics of each project.

The aesthetic aspect is not the only advantage of green roof; its use has advantages in construction, economic, functional and environmental aspects. Thus the rooftop garden has become in recent times, in a solution within the scope of bioclimatic construction.

ADVANTAGES OF GREEN ROOF AS A BIOCLIMATIC CONSTRUCTIVE SYSTEM:

CONSTRUCTION AND ECONOMIC RESOURCES:

•It is an effective acoustic insulator, because its components greatly reduce the noise caused by rain, hail and also help control urban noise.

•Contributes to lower the budget for air conditioning costs, since the use of any type of cooling / heating system decreases considerably, thereby increasing the energy efficiency of the building. This is due to the high thermal inertia with the assembly formed by the substrate (ground) and vegetation, which minimizes overheating by solar radiation.

•It protects the membranes that assembly the components of the roof cover, thus avoiding an extra cost for the continued maintenance.

FUNCTIONALITY:

•Create a new green space, a new place to stay in the building.

•It helps reduce the visual impact, creating a natural space.

•Prolongs the life of the components of the cover.

•The surface where vegetative cover is assembled is able to absorb between 80% and 90% of the amount of rain that falls. Much of the water evaporates, and the other slowly flows through the drainage channels. Thus, in case of heavy rain, it lightens a certain way the sewage system.

SUSTAINABILITY:

•Helps reduce the rate of absorption of electromagnetic waves.

•It acts as a filter, improving air quality.

•The elements of the drainage system of the roof cover are made from recycled materials like rubber, polyethylene, etc.

•Generates a natural space, creating an environment that increases biodiversity. Plant species coexist in a new habitat with birds, insects, etc. Green roofs or "living roofs" are a bioclimatic strategy to take into consideration from the beginning of the project. For all such advantages, this type of roofing system is proposed as a strategy that positively influences the search for sustainable solutions in the field of construction.
